General Hints

  • Check that you satisfy the assumed knowledge and prerequisites for any courses you plan to take.
  • Preparing a timetable plan for both semesters will save you time. The easiest way to do this is to use the Timetable Planner (pdf 91kB) and the Course Planner so that you can schedule your studies. Note your lecture details as these times will not change. Then note a couple of suitable tutorial details for each course.
  • Enrol as early as possible to secure your preferred classes, as enrolments are on a first-in basis.

Request to Overload Form

All full-time Bachelor of Economics study plans consider 12 units of study per semester as a standard full-time enrolment, i.e usually 4 x 3 unit courses. Anything over 12 units is an overload. If you wish to enrol into an overload you should be aware that it can seriously affect your academic performance. Research has shown that a student may not reach their academic potential if they overload.

From Semester 2, 2009 the maximum number of units you can enrol into via Access Adelaide is 12 units. If you attempt to enrol into more than 12 units, you will receive an error message and will need to apply for permission to enrol. Your application will be assessed using the following criteria:

GPA is >4.6 or ~60% average

You will normally be approved to overload up to 15-units.

GPA is <4.6 or ~60% average, but it is your FINAL SEMESTER

Attempts will be made to avoid making you return for another semester with only 1 course to study. However, approval to overload may need to be denied if academic performance indicates that you may not cope with an overload.

GPA is <4.6 of ~60% average and it is NOT your final semester

You will only be given permission to overload (over 12-units) in exceptional circumstances. Your application will be assessed by the Program Director.

24-Course Degree Structure

From 2008 the courses within the Bachelor of Commerce, Economics, Finance and Business Information Technology degrees will become 24-course degrees. This will be done by changing the unit value of Level II and Level III courses to 3 units.

The new 24-course degree will be;

Level I - Eight 3-unit courses (no change from 20-course degree)

Level II - Eight 3-unit courses (changed from six, 4 unit courses) - commencing 2009

Level III - Eight 3-unit courses (changed from six, 4 unit courses) - commencing 2010

Total units for the 3-year degrees will remain at 72 units

The reasons for the change include:

  • Increased flexibility for students
  • To align the structure of these Adelaide degrees with those of the other Go8 Australian universities
  • Improved ability to include study from a number of disciplines
  • An increase in the courses offered in some disciplines

How does this affect continuing students?

The changes to the degrees should not affect continuing students, provided you meeting the following conditions:

  • commenced your degree in 2007 or prior
  • complete your second year courses before 2009 and
  • complete third year courses before 2010

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the correct study plan for me (undergraduates)?

If you are a continuing undergraduate student, you must follow the study plan outlined in the 'continuing students' section; students commencing their study in 2008 should follow the study plan in the 'students commencing in 2008' section.

How do I receive credit for courses completed at another tertiary institution?

You will need to complete an application for transfer credit and attach a copy of your transcript (original or certified copy) and the detailed course outline of the relevant courses. Application forms for Transfer credit are available from the Economics Office.

Do I enrol into a tute or a lecture?

When enrolling in Economics courses you will be enrolling into a tute that will automatically place you into the associated lecture. There is an exception. Where there is a repeat lecture stream the above is not automatic. You will need to select the lecture class number after entering the tute class number.

Can I swap my tute time?

You can only swap tutorials up until the end of the second week of each semester and this must be done by you on-line. Swapping tutes means that you should first check there is space in the tute you have elected to swap to, then you should immediately drop yourself from the tute you are in (this will completely delete your enrolment in this course) and immediately add yourself into the new tute. If possible, have a few tutes that you are able to swap into.

Where do I find class numbers?

The Course Planner allows you to search all courses that are scheduled in 2006, view all of the classes for each course and to plan your timetable BEFORE you enrol. You can search and view class details for courses one by one or you can add courses to a cart and build up a list of all classes for your courses. You can also print this information if you wish.
